The PKK bomber responsible for the January 3 car bomb explosion that rocked Diyarbakir, killing 6 and wounding 67, has been captured. Erdal Polat was arrested by police yesterday after cell phone signals led security experts to his location.

Since Polat was captured, security forces have learned that he received his bomb training in a PKK camp in northern Iraq, after spending 5 months in Turkish prison for engaging in propoganda for the PKK terror group. Polat reportedly admitted during interrogations that the “real target” of the January 3 bomb was the Turkish military pilots involved in the over the border operation in northern Iraq a few weeks ago. While the bomb did wound many military members, who were passing in a civilian transport vehicle as the explosion took place, the majority of the deaths were of young students studying at a “dershane” or lesson house right behind the vehicle which exploded.

The explosion yesterday took place in front of a “dershane,” or study center which was filled with students. Many students were injured by broken glass, and two female students were killed. Diyarbakir Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu said that while the target of the PKK detonation had certainly been the military transport, which had civilian license plates, the location had caused even greater destruction due to the crowded “dershane.”
