Sixteen people, including seven policemen and three soldiers were injured Thursday in the western Turkish city of Izmir in an explosion in a minibus carrying officers, authorities said.
The car, parked on the side of a road in a residential area in the Aegean city, exploded at around 7:45 am (0445 GMT) just as a military car and a police bus were approaching it, the Izmir governor’s office said.
“The explosion occurred in a vacant car left at the blast scene. We believe the blast was the result of plastic explosives set off by remote control,” Governor Cahit Kirac was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying.

Turkish warplanes bombed an outlawed PKK hideout in neighboring northern Iraq overnight, the military said Sunday in a statement posted on its website.
The air raid targeted a cave in the Avasin-Basyan region, which served as a base for a large group of outlawed PKK separatists who were preparing for an attack across the border in Turkey, the statement said.
The hideout “was hit successfully” and the warplanes returned safely to their bases, it added.
The military provided no casualty figures.
Turkey, provided with intelligence by the United States, has stepped up military action against the PKK since December.

Some could find the headline odd, I respect them. However I did not want some other expression given the fact that the PKK is being used as a Russian pawn once again against Turkey in the Caucasian chess game after a decade.
The first accurate diagnosis for the mine blast in the Kemah town of eastern province of Erzincan was made by Fatih Cekirge, the editor-in-chief of hurriyet.com.tr. He said, “It is clear that our nine soldiers were not killed in a simple terror attack. This is a by-product of an international war on energy security which directly affects Turkey’s future.”
He is absolutely correct, and recent history is the best proof of this analysis.

Yusuf Kanli, Turkish Daily News
Fire … fell again in the hearts of nine mothers … a landmine planted by separatist Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, terrorists on a road near the Acemoğlu bridge at the Kemah township in the eastern Anatolian city of Erzincan, claimed the life of nine soldiers, including two senior officers. Two soldiers were reported wounded, their condition is not yet known.
Terrorists, of course, cannot be expected to abide with conventions and international arrangements against land mines … They are terrorists … Their aim is to stage terrorist acts and terrorize the society. But these land mines are not produced by the terrorists … They are products of some “friendly” and even “allied” countries.

The attack, which killed nine Turkish soldiers, cannot be seen as a simple terror act and should be evaluated from a wider perspective which includes international war on energy security and Russia-Georgia conflict.
I had witnessed the high-security measures taken on the motorway between Erzincan-Kemah. This axis also hosts a portion of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline and a major natural gas pipeline along with it. The planned Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad would also pass through this motorway. This is what generates the significance of Kemah.
A while ago a bomb attack was carried out on the BTC pipeline. This spot is located on Erzincan’s Refahiye motorway. PKK claimed responsibility for this attack.
Russia and Armenia oppose the BTC oil pipeline. It is not a secret that Russia is uncomfortable with the BTC pipeline, which was designated as an alternative energy route.
