Eight suspects in last week’s deadly bombings in İstanbul’s Güngören district, which left 17 dead and more than 150 wounded, were arrested on Saturday.
The suspects, believed by the court to which they were remanded to be members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), were arrested for “membership in the separatist PKK” and “carrying out bloody attacks,” the Anatolia news agency reported on Saturday. A twin bombing attack in İstanbul’s Güngören district on Sunday evening sent shockwaves across the country. The first bomb went off in a telephone booth, wounding many. Only 10 minutes later, a second and larger device exploded 40 meters away in a trash bin just as crowds had gathered to help the wounded in the first explosion. The attack left 17 dead and more than 150 wounded. Turkish newspapers reported yesterday that the eight suspects received training in bomb making and bomb attacks in PKK training camps in northern Iraq. Soon after the attack, police had said the bombing bore the marks of the PKK, but the terrorist group denied involvement and attributed the attack to “dark forces,” an apparent reference to hard-line Turkish nationalists who are suspected of seeking to foment chaos to strengthen the political influence of the military.
Interior Minister Beşir Atalay spoke to reporters on Saturday, saying that those who aided and abetted or actively took part in the bombings had been arrested.
“I am pleased to tell you that the entire plot has been illuminated; a number of the perpetrators were arrested in light of strong evidence that doesn’t leave any room for doubt,” he said.
Atalay declined to say to which organization, if any, those arrested belonged.
“The attack is the work of a bloody and separatist terrorist organization. It is an inhumane act,” he said, adding that the İstanbul police are continuing the investigation to shed light on the relationship between the suspects and an illegal organization, if any.
Atalay also said the arrested suspects were behind another bombing in İstanbul’s Büyükçekmece district in June that left 10 injured.
“We are doing our best to prevent any further bloody acts before they are carried out. We have seen great success in this sense. Our citizenry has helped us a great deal in this regard. I will not be able to offer much detail on the subject as it has been transferred to the judiciary. Our work is under way to fully shed light on the treacherous attack,” he added.
