Turkish warplanes bombed an outlawed PKK hideout in neighboring northern Iraq overnight, the military said Sunday in a statement posted on its website.

The air raid targeted a cave in the Avasin-Basyan region, which served as a base for a large group of outlawed PKK separatists who were preparing for an attack across the border in Turkey, the statement said.

The hideout “was hit successfully” and the warplanes returned safely to their bases, it added.

The military provided no casualty figures.

Turkey, provided with intelligence by the United States, has stepped up military action against the PKK since December.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by much of the international community including the U.S. and the EU. Turkey has been carrying out several air strikes and a week-long ground incursion into northern Iraq in February, where more than 2,000 PKK terrorists take refuge.
