Eight suspects in last week’s deadly bombings in İstanbul’s Güngören district, which left 17 dead and more than 150 wounded, were arrested on Saturday.
The suspects, believed by the court to which they were remanded to be members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), were arrested for “membership in the separatist PKK” and “carrying out bloody attacks,” the Anatolia news agency reported on Saturday. A twin bombing attack in İstanbul’s Güngören district on Sunday evening sent shockwaves across the country. The first bomb went off in a telephone booth, wounding many. Only 10 minutes later, a second and larger device exploded 40 meters away in a trash bin just as crowds had gathered to help the wounded in the first explosion. The attack left 17 dead and more than 150 wounded. Turkish newspapers reported yesterday that the eight suspects received training in bomb making and bomb attacks in PKK training camps in northern Iraq. Soon after the attack, police had said the bombing bore the marks of the PKK, but the terrorist group denied involvement and attributed the attack to “dark forces,” an apparent reference to hard-line Turkish nationalists who are suspected of seeking to foment chaos to strengthen the political influence of the military.

An outlawed PKK separatist charged with two deadly blasts in Istanbul has confessed to detonating the bombs and watching the ensuing carnage, Hurriyet daily reported Sunday.
Police have concluded that the June 27 attacks, which claimed 17 lives, were staged by the outlawed separatist PKK, Interior Minister Besir Atalay said Saturday, as he announced the arrest of several suspects.
The bomber was identified as Huseyin Tureli, trained in PKK camps in neighboring northern Iraq. He was among eight suspects whom an Istanbul court Saturday remanded to custody pending trial.
Tureli confessed to planting the bombs in a crowded pedestrian street in the residential neighbourhood of Gungoren and detonating them by mobile telephone, Hurriyet reported.
