Two Turkish soldiers were killed and nine others were injured in an armed attack carried out by outlawed PKK separatists in the Kigi district of the eastern province of Bingol, Turkish news agencies reported.

Irfan Balkanoglu, governor of the province, said the two soldiers had been seriously injured in an ambush while on their way to secure the construction site of a dam in Kigi.

They were rushed to hospital by helicopter, but could not be saved, he added.

A large-scale operation is under way in the region.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as the most of the international community, including the U.S. and the EU.
