The outlawed separatist PKK is the terrorist organization which took the most external support in the world, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said on Thursday.
Turkey has been fighting against not only terrorism but also the support extended to terrorism, Cicek told at a fast-breaking dinner hosted by the Union of European Turkish Democrats in Brussels on Thursday evening.
“None of the terrorist organizations could pursue its existence for a long time without an external support,” he said, adding terrorism is an international problem.
“However, today, terrorism issue is used for foreign policy interests,” he added.
Cicek also said the Council of Ministers, in its last meeting, decided to extend the period of cross-border motion, which allows Turkish soldiers to stage operations on terrorists in the north of Iraq, for one more year.
He added the issue would be brought on the agenda immediately after the Parliament would be opened.
The validity of the current motion will expire Oct. 17.
Turkey, provided with intelligence by the United States, has stepped up military action against the outlawed separatist PKK since December. Turkey has been carrying out several air strikes and a week-long ground incursion into northern Iraq in February, where more than 2,000 PKK terrorists take refuge.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by much of the international community including the United States and the EU.
