German prosecutors say they have charged a 48-year-old Turkish Kurd over allegations he was a leader in Germany of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Federal prosecutors said yesterday that Hüseyin A. was charged on Dec. 22 with allegedly running the organization’s southern sector in Germany from February to June 2007, and Germany-wide operations after that until April 2008. Operating under the alias Hüseyin Çolak, the suspect allegedly coordinated organizational, financial, propaganda and personnel matters for the group. He faces a possible five years in prison if convicted of membership in a criminal organization. No trial date has been set. The PKK has been fighting for self-rule in southeastern Turkey since 1984.
