Eight arrested over bombing

Police have detained eight suspects over a bomb attack last month on the offices of the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, in Istanbul, the Anatolia news agency said yesterday.
A little known leftist group, the Revolutionary Command, believed to have links with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, claimed responsibility for the Dec. 1, 2008 blast in which a policeman was killed. The home-made shrapnel bomb exploded at the entrance to the AKP’s Istanbul headquarters, leaving nine other people injured.
More crowded than usual
The building in the Sütlüce district, on the city’s European side, was more crowded than usual as the deadline for applications from candidates for municipal elections in March was to expire that evening.
