Turkish warplanes hit PKK hideouts in northen Iraq, says military

Turkish war jets hit hideouts of the terror organization PKK inside northern Iraq, the military said in a statement Thursday.

It said all planes returned to their bases safely and described the operation, which was carried out late Wednesday and early Thursday, as “effective.” The warplanes hit their targets in the Zap and Avasin-Basian regions in the area, the statement added. Read the rest of this entry »



Nine soldiers killed in blast in southeastern Turkey, army chief says

Nine soldiers in a U.S.-made armored personnel carrier were killed in a roadside blast in southeastern Turkey, army chief Gen. Ilker Basbug said Wednesday.

A tank and an M-113 armored personnel carrier were on a mission to secure the region before the passage of a military convoy when the explosion occurred, he said in a televised press conference. 

“The personnel carrier has around 4-4.5 centimeters of armor underneath. These explosives must have been strong to cause such damage. According to our initial assessment, it is likely to be a homemade explosive,” he said, adding a probe was launched on the incident. Read the rest of this entry »



NATO chief says Roj TV could be shut down if links to PKK proved

Newly appointed NATO chief, former Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Monday that Denmark-based Roj TV station could be closed down if it is proved that it has connections with the terrorist organization PKK.

If Danish investigators find any relations between Roj Tv and the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, then the network will be closed down, Rasmussen said at an Istanbul summit of the Alliance of Civilizations, a forum promoting understanding between the Western and Islamic worlds.
