Four Turkish soldiers killed in southeast

Four Turkish soldiers were killed on Sunday in a clash with Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, terrorists in the southeastern province of Hakkari, the army said.

A noncommissioned officer and three sergeants were killed in the clash near the district of Şemdinli in Hakkari province, the military said in a statement posted on its Web site.

Provincial Gov. Muammer Türker said the terrorists hurled a hand grenade at troops returning from a security sweep of rural ground near Şemdinli. Read the rest of this entry »



Twenty-six PKK-linked terrorists killed in Iran

Twenty-six members of an outlawed group linked with the terror organization PKK were killed in northwestern Iran in an operation carried out by Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, according to reports on Sunday.

An Iranian commander said an operation against terrorists groups in the northwestern part of the country has delivered a “deadly blow” to the PEJAK, the PKK’s breakaway faction in Iran.

“In an operation to clean up the West Azerbaijan and Kurdistan provinces of counter-revolutionary and terrorist groups, 26 of the agents were killed,” Mohammad Pakpoor, commander of the Revolutionary Guards ground forces, was quoted by the Fars news agency as saying. Turkish man killed in explosion in Istanbul

One person was killed and another injured in an explosion inside a trash container in Istanbul, police said Saturday.

Istanbul Police Chief Hüseyin Çapkın said the blast late Friday in the Gaziosmanpaşa neighborhood killed a night watchman guarding a nearby building. Another man was slightly injured in the leg.

Çapkın said the blast was caused by explosives placed inside the container, but gave few other details. Read the rest of this entry »



Turkey, Iraq discuss trade and sharing intelligence on terrorists, officials say

Iraq and Turkey are considering economic and security agreements that would improve the often strained ties between the two neighbours, the foreign ministers of both countries said Tuesday.

Baghdad and Ankara have been on edge, with drought-stricken Iraq accusing Turkey of cutting off water and Turkey accusing Iraq of failing to do enough to stop attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, known as PKK.

Both countries, though, have a vested interest in improving ties because of their shared trade, oil and security concerns.

High on the list of discussions Tuesday in Baghdad between Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari and his visiting Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu, was tripling trade between the two countries. Read the rest of this entry »



Soldier, Kurdish rebel killed in clash in Turkey

A Turkish soldier and a Kurdish rebel have been killed in a clash in southern Turkey, the Anatolia press agency said in a report Saturday.

Rebels from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) launched the attack late on Friday close to a radar station near Karlisu in Antakya province, close to the Syrian border. Another soldier was wounded, the report said.

The army launched a combing operation following the attack in which the rebel was killed, the regional government in Antakya was quoted as saying. Read the rest of this entry »



Two PKK members killed in Van

Two members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, have been killed in fighting with paramilitary troops in eastern Turkey, security sources said Tuesday.

The fighting erupted late Monday when troops patrolling a mountainous area in Van province, near the Iranian border, encountered militants from the PKK, the sources said.

Last month, the PKK said it was extending a unilateral truce by six weeks until September 1 in anticipation of peace proposals by its jailed leader Abdullah Öcalan. Read the rest of this entry »
