Turkish man killed in explosion in Istanbul
15 08 2009One person was killed and another injured in an explosion inside a trash container in Istanbul, police said Saturday.
Istanbul Police Chief Hüseyin Çapkın said the blast late Friday in the Gaziosmanpaşa neighborhood killed a night watchman guarding a nearby building. Another man was slightly injured in the leg.
Çapkın said the blast was caused by explosives placed inside the container, but gave few other details.
Çapkın said it was too early to call the blast a terrorist attack, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported.
The attack occurred on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the terror organization PKK’s first attack in 1984 near the town of Eruh in the eastern province of Siirt. PKK has carried out attacks to mark the date in past years.
Leftist and Islamic groups have also carried out bombings in the city.
