US accuses three PKK terrorists of drug trafficking
14 10 2009The United States is targeting three members of a Kurdish terrorist group with financial sanctions after designating them narcotics traffickers.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced the move Wednesday against Murat Karayilan, a Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, commander in northern Iraq, and members Ali Riza Altun and Zubayir Aydar.
The designation would freeze any assets the three held in the United States and prohibits U.S. citizens from doing business with them.
The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the EU and the U.S., and has been fighting for self-rule in Southeast Turkey since 1984. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people.
The group uses strongholds in northern Iraq for cross-border raids.
