Parliament speaker says 870 PKK members applied to benefit from repentance law

27 10 2009

The Turkish parliament speaker said on Tuesday that 870 members of terrorist organization have applied to benefit from the repentance law in the last four years.
Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Şahin said that the 34 members of terrorist organization PKK (from Makhmour refugee camp and Qandil Mountain) were not the first ones who applied for this law. “None of them (who applied earlier) caused such an ugly picture,” Şahin said.

He said 870 PKK members have applied to benefit from the repentance law between June 1, 2005 and June 15, 2009. Şahin said, “636 of them did not get any penalty. Sentences of 30 were reduced. Demands of 124 were rejected and investigations have been under way for 78 PKK members.”

On October 19, 34 members of PKK from Makhmour refugee camp and Qandil Mountain –8 of which were dressed in PKK terrorist uniforms– surrendered to Turkish authorities at Habur border gate. Huge rallies were held with the participation of thousands of people and DTP officials to welcome the group of PKK members, a scene which created strong reaction in the public, opposition, media and the judiciary.
