5 PKK terrorists killed in armed clash

28 10 2009

Five members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were killed in an armed clash with Turkish security forces late on Monday in eastern Bingöl province.
The clashes in a remote region came days after a group of outlawed PKK members surrendered after returning from neighboring Iraq to support Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s reform process. The clash was one of the biggest skirmishes since the government announced the Kurdish initiative in July.

Operations against the terrorist PKK continued on yesterday, and the army deployed more soldiers, backed by helicopter gunships, to the region, military sources told Reuters on condition their names were not used.

Meanwhile, in a joint operation by the Ağrı gendarmerie and police department, a truck heading to the eastern province of Tunceli to help PKK members in rural parts of the province has been seized, the Cihan news agency reported yesterday. More than 7,000 bullets, hidden among bags of grass, were found in the truck. Two people were detained in connection to the incident.
