The local leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in the southeastern province of Mardin was killed in a clash with security forces six months ago, it has been learned.
According to reports on PKK-linked Web sites, Ömer Müslüm, 40, a resident of Syria who operated under the codename “Rüstem,” was killed in May during clashes with security forces in Mardin.
The PKK claimed it had not released any information previously since it had not been able to recover the body and had no information about Müslüm, who took up arms 18 years ago and is believed to have been involved in many clashes.
The PKK launched its armed attacks in 1984; the conflict has claimed more than 40,000 lives to date.
