Police clash with Kurdish protesters in Istanbul, southeastern Turkey

News reports say Kurdish protesters threw stones and firebombs at police in Istanbul and southeast Turkey as tensions escalated over the arrest of dozens of Kurds on charges of links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Police dispersed dozens of protesters in Istanbul’s largely Kurdish Gazi district on Sunday.

More clashes erupted between Kurdish demonstrators and anti-riot police in southeastern Turkey on Sunday, the second day of violent protests. DTP mayors detained in PKK investigation

Thirty-one people including several mayors from the disbanded Democratic Society Party, or DTP, were detained early Thursday morning as part of an investigation related to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Many of those detained were former DTP deputies who remained in Parliament as independents after the closure of the party and had announced plans to join the Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP.

Turkish military kills nine Kurd militants; nine others surrender

The Turkish military has killed nine Kurdish militants in the country’s Southeast, while another nine have surrendered to the authorities, media reports and officials said Thursday.

The militants, killed in fighting in the provinces of Mardin and Hakkari, included senior members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which has led a bloody 25-year struggle in the region, unnamed sources told Anatolia news agency, without specifying when the operations took place. Serap Eser, Molotov cocktail attack victim, laid to rest

Serap Eser, 17, who was severely injured in early November by a Molotov cocktail attack on a municipal bus and died at a hospital where she had been receiving treatment on Monday, was buried yesterday in a Küçükçekmece, İstanbul, cemetery. 
 
The attack took place on an unlit street in İstanbul’s Küçükçekmece district; Eser was heading home from a Student Selection Examination (ÖSS) course. Her face and body were badly burned and she was rushed to Bağcılar State Research and Teaching Hospital. Seven people suspected of being responsible for the Molotov cocktail attack were detained on Nov. 27 in an operation targeting members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). 7 Turkish soldiers killed in terrorist attack near Tokat

Seven Turkish soldiers were killed Monday near the village of Sazak in Tokat province after their patrol was stormed by terrorists, broadcaster CNNTürk reported.

Four others were injured in the clash in the Black Sea province, and two were seriously hurt, CNNTürk reported. The injured soldiers were taken to area hospitals.

Rafet Erdem, the mayor of the nearby city of Reşadiye, said Tokat had not been the scene of a terrorist attack since 1997. Read the rest of this entry »



Clashes go on between police and PKK supporters

Clashes between security forces and locals that first erupted Monday in the eastern province of Ağrı continued on Wednesday.

The incidents began after groups in various cities gathered to celebrate the foundation of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and the prison conditions of its convicted leader, Abdullah Öcalan.

Protesters clash with Turkish police at PKK rally in Hakkari

Violent clashes that started Monday in Turkey continued Tuesday morning in the eastern province of Hakkari.

Around 300 people gathered in the Yüksekova district center to celebrate the founding of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and protest the prison conditions of the PKK’s jailed leader, Abdullah Öcalan, the news site CNNTürk reported Tuesday.

Nazif Ataman, the head of the district office of the Democratic Society Party, or DTP, and other party officials called on the protesters to disperse and asked shop owners to open their stores in the district.
