Clashes go on between police and PKK supporters
2 12 2009Clashes between security forces and locals that first erupted Monday in the eastern province of Ağrı continued on Wednesday.
The incidents began after groups in various cities gathered to celebrate the foundation of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and the prison conditions of its convicted leader, Abdullah Öcalan.
A group in Ağrı’s provincial center erected barricades Tuesday night and clashed with police. Seven people were arrested as a result.
Meanwhile, in the Mediterranean province of Adana, another group gathered for similar purposes. The group threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at police and set a telephone switchboard on fire, the Doğan news agency reported.
Protests also occurred Tuesday night in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa and in Şırnak’s Cizre district along the Syrian border.
On the same day, 300 people gathered in the center of the southeastern province of Hakkari’s Yüksekova district. Democratic Society Party, or DTP, district head Nazif Ataman, together with other party officials, called on the protesters to disperse and asked shop owners to open their stores in the district.
The crowd refused to disperse despite police warnings. The protesters then threw stones at the police, who responded with tear gas. In the neighboring Şemdinli district, many shop owners did not open their stores Tuesday.
Clashes also occurred in several neighborhoods of Istanbul and İzmir. A group in İzmir threw a Molotov cocktail at a public bus but caused no injuries.
A group also clashed with police in the Dolapdere neighborhood of Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district Monday evening. Some 60 people chanting slogans praising the PKK entered Dolapdere Avenue and threw Molotov cocktails at police waiting for them at the end of the street.
