DTP mayors detained in PKK investigation
24 12 2009Thirty-one people including several mayors from the disbanded Democratic Society Party, or DTP, were detained early Thursday morning as part of an investigation related to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
Many of those detained were former DTP deputies who remained in Parliament as independents after the closure of the party and had announced plans to join the Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP.
The operation was launched by the chief public prosecutor’s office in Diyarbakır and took place in 11 provinces.
A total of 31 people were detained in the operation. Among them were Siirt Mayor Selim Sadak from the DTP and Cizre Mayor Aydın Budak, who were arrested after their homes were searched by the police.
Others include former provincial chairman of the disbanded DTP, Fırat Anlı; Diyarbakır deputy mayor Ali Şimşek; Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbaş; and former Dicle Mayor Abdullah Akengin.
