Three soldiers were killed and two were injured Tuesday when a land mine exploded in the southeastern province of Hakkari during a security sweep.
The wounded soldiers were airlifted to the nearby Hakkari Military Hospital. Specialist sergeants Fatih Aydoğdu, 30; Mehmet Kaya Çelik, 24; and Nuri Aydın, also 24, were killed.
Several deadly blasts occurred in Hakkari in March. Two separate attacks occurred earlier in the month, killing two soldiers and wounding four in the district of Şemdinli, which is close to Turkey’s borders with Iraq and Iran. Read the rest of this entry »

One soldier died and one was injured in a conflict with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in the southeastern province of Hakkari on Sunday, private news channel NTV reported.
The conflict erupted in the Dağlıca region, which has been the scene of bloody confrontations in the past. PKK members opened fire on soldiers who were en route to an operation, the TV channel reported.
The PKK emerged at the beginning of the 1980s with demands for more rights for Turkey’s Kurdish population, which lives mainly in the eastern and southeastern regions of the country. The conflict has continued since then, causing more than 30,000 deaths. Read the rest of this entry »

Turkish security forces on Thursday seized 8.5 tons of hashish in the country’s Southeast and detained six people, media reports said.
The haul was found buried in a small hamlet in Diyarbakır’s Lice district in a dawn operation by gendarmerie forces, the CNNTürk news channel said.
Investigators were investigating whether the drugs were linked to armed Kurdish terrorists waging a 25-year-old campaign against the Turkish military, the Anatolia news agency said.
Turkey accuses the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, of narcotics and people smuggling. The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as the United States and the European Union. Read the rest of this entry »

Police have detained 23 suspects in operations in 13 provinces, charging them with membership in a terror organization and attacking public institutions’ Web sites, the daily Radikal reported Wednesday.
The suspects, allegedly members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, were taken to Diyarbakır for questioning. The investigation of this case was still continuing when the Daily News went to print.
A hacker team for the outlawed organization was captured previously, but the members reorganized and attacked roughly 300 Web sites belonging to public institutions.
Diyarbakır police started an operation Wednesday in the 13 provinces, including Istanbul, İzmir and Ankara. The organization’s hacker team, whose code name is the “Cold Attack Team,” took orders from leaders in Kandil in Iraq and Europe regarding which Web sites to hack, when to hack them and which messages to place there. A soldier was killed Tuesday when a mine believed to have been planted by Kurdish separatists exploded in the second deadly blast in as many days, the Anatolia news agency reported.
The soldier was killed and three others were injured Tuesday in an explosion in the district of Şemdinli in Hakkari province, close to Turkey’s borders with Iraq and Iran.
The explosion occurred during a security sweep of farmland. The operation was launched Monday shortly after another mine blast, blamed on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, killed one soldier and wounded three others. Read the rest of this entry »

Belgian prosecutors on Friday charged eight people with taking part in “the activities of a terrorist group,” a spokeswoman said, the day after a police swoop on Kurdish terrorist suspects.
Lieve Pellens of the Federal Belgian prosecutor’s office said a Brussels magistrate remanded seven people into custody, out of 12 brought before officials after 18 people were detained up by Brussels police on Thursday.

Former parliamentarian of the banned Democracy Party (DEP) Remzi Kartal and his assistant Zubeyr Aydar were detained in a wide-scale operation launched in Belgium against Kurdish PKK organization.
Belgian police said several members of the “terrorist organization” were also taken into custody in ongoing operations launched at 25 different locations. Police also raided studios of ROJ TV, broadcast organ of the terrorist organization, in Denderleeuw town near Brussels and detained four people. Police investigation continues at the studios.
Meanwhile, it was reported that PKK called its supporters to launch a protest in front of ROJ TV offices. Broadcast of ROJ TV was halted after the raid. Read the rest of this entry »
