Three dead, two wounded in mine blast in Turkey’s Southeast
30 03 2010Three soldiers were killed and two were injured Tuesday when a land mine exploded in the southeastern province of Hakkari during a security sweep.
The wounded soldiers were airlifted to the nearby Hakkari Military Hospital. Specialist sergeants Fatih Aydoğdu, 30; Mehmet Kaya Çelik, 24; and Nuri Aydın, also 24, were killed.
Several deadly blasts occurred in Hakkari in March. Two separate attacks occurred earlier in the month, killing two soldiers and wounding four in the district of Şemdinli, which is close to Turkey’s borders with Iraq and Iran.
Turkish news reports claim the attacks were carried out by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.
In the latest attack, the PKK allegedly detonated the mine by remote control, Doğan news agency reported.
