Trilateral action plan announced to fight PKK
12 04 2010A security committee comprised Turkish, Iraqi and U.S. officials on Sunday agreed on an “action plan” to fight the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
The fifth meeting of the trilateral security committee between Turkey, Iraq and the U.S. was held Sunday in Istanbul, according to statement released Monday by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.
The participating delegations were headed by Turkish Interior Minister Beşir Atalay, Iraqi State Minister for National Security Shirvan Al Waili and U.S. Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson of the United States, according to the statement.
The trilateral action plan sets out the guidelines for the future work of the committee and contains the actions that should be taken to facilitate joint efforts against the PKK. Participants expressed their commitment to rapidly work on the implementation of the plan, the statement said.
Participants exchanged views about the work of the Trilateral Security Committee and reiterated their strong commitment to combat PKK terrorism. They agreed on the plan, which is dated April 11, according to the statement.
The trilateral mechanism was formed in Baghdad in November 2008 by senior Iraqi, Turkish and U.S. officials to combat the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union, the U.S. and Turkey.
