Turkish soldier dies in attack on military vehicle in Southeast
28 05 2010One Turkish soldier died Thursday in an attack on a military vehicle in the southeastern province of Siirt’s Pervari district, Anatolia news agency reported.
Bahtiyar Yalınca died in the attack at 9 p.m. during a routine patrol in the town center. Another soldier was injured.
Yalınca’s body will be sent to his hometown of Kütahya later Friday after a military ceremony in Siirt.
Clashes between the Turkish military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, have intensified in the past week.
Another Turkish soldier died in clashes near the country’s border with Iraq and five PKK members were killed in separate clashes in Tunceli province Wednesday.
Turkish warplanes last week bombed hideouts in northern Iraq that PKK members have used to stage hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets for decades. The military reported that 19 PKK members were killed in last week’s airstrike, Anatolia reported.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has intensified its attacks since December when Turkey’s Constitutional Court shut down a pro-Kurdish party on charges of ties to the organization.
