Six Turkish soldiers killed in rocket attack on naval base
31 05 2010Six Turkish soldiers were killed Monday when terrorists fired rockets on a naval base in the southern Turkish city of İskenderun, Anatolia news agency reported.
Seven soldiers were also wounded in the attack that targeted a military vehicle carrying troops for the changing of the guard, the report said.
Three of them were in a critical condition and were taken to a military hospital in the capital, Ankara. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack that took place around 4 a.m. Anatolia news agency and other media reports described the assailants as “terrorists.”
The outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, has intensified attacks since the end of April. PKK militants killed five members of Turkey’s security forces plus a village guard and a civilian on Saturday.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and much of the international community, took up arms against Ankara in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives.
