One Turkish soldier dies in clash against PKK in Southeast
14 06 2010One Turkish soldier was killed and four were wounded late Sunday in the latest clash between the military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in rural Hakkari province in southeastern Turkey.
The governor of Hakkari announced that Pvt. Mehmet Ali Birlik was shot dead in the clash, which broke at 10:30 p.m. in a rural area close to the village of Konur in the town of Şemdinli, broadcaster CNNTürk’s web site said.
The wounded soldiers were taken to a military hospital in Hakkari.
Meanwhile, a land mine explosion in southeastern province of Siirt’s Baykan district injured one soldier and one civilian.
The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the European Union and the United States, took up arms in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives.
Also, members of the PKK broke in a house in Black Sea province of Gümüşhane, CNNTürk news site reported. They took some basic goods from the home and left. The owner of the house called security forces, which initiated a search in the area.
