Deadly attack in Istanbul linked to earlier bombing, official says

The bombing that killed four soldiers and a teenage girl Tuesday in Istanbul’s Halkalı district has been linked to a bombing in Küçükçekmece on June 8 that injured 15 police officers, Istanbul’s governor said Thursday.

Istanbul Gov. Hüseyin Avni Mutlu said investigators had evidence that proved the two attacks were related. Tuesday’s attack was carried out by a remote-controlled bomb, Mutlu said, but he offered no other details about the explosion.

A illegal organization called the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, or TAK, linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, claimed Tuesday’s attack on a bus that was carrying military personnel and their families. The dead included the 17-year-old daughter of an officer.

The PKK is labeled a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

Twenty-seven people were detained Wednesday for questioning about Tuesday’s bomb attack. Mutlu said on Thursday that 19 of those suspects had been sent to the public prosecutor after investigators showed they had evidence that the suspects had participated in preparing for the second attack.
