Turkey to host COE conference on ‘Prevention of terrorism’

Turkey will host a conference on “Prevention of terrorism” in Istanbul on December 16 and 17.

Turkey which is assuming the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (COE) will host a conference titled “Prevention of terrorism: prevention tools, legal instruments and their implementation”.

The Conference will bring together national and international experts and offer participants insight into better prevention of terrorism by addressing issues relating to its changing nature, the incitement and recruitment for terrorism and the prevention of its financing. One PKK member killed in firefight in Southeastern Turkey

The Turkish military shot dead an alleged member of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in a firefight in Southeastern Turkey Saturday.

The clash happened near the village of Çalışkan in Batman province when a group of alleged PKK members responded with shots when an army patrol called on them to surrender.

Turkey’s prime minister indicated last month that military operations against the PKK would be scaled down after the PKK extended a cease-fire until next summer. Read the rest of this entry »



French police arrest 6 PKK suspects

French police on Tuesday arrested six suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

Police said the arrests of the suspected PKK members in southern Marseille on Tuesday came as part of a probe by a Paris antiterrorism judge investigating alleged illegal financing of the group.

The six, who include “an important [PKK] member on the European level” were being held in the southern port city after being arrested as part of a probe into the group’s financing, officials said. Read the rest of this entry »
