Istanbul police detain 20 for cemevi vandalism

Twenty suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, have been apprehended for their alleged involvement in the vandalism of an Alevi cemevi in Istanbul’s Başakşehir district.

Police intelligence and anti-terror teams launched simultaneous operations in several locations after a cemevi, or Alevi house of worship, was vandalized and several public buses were burned in Başakşehir’s Şahintepe neighborhood. Read the rest of this entry »



Kurdish protesters clash with Turkish police in Istanbul

Turkish police on Sunday used water cannons and tear gas to disperse dozens of Kurdish youths hurling gas bombs and stones after a demonstration in central Istanbul.

The unrest erupted after about 2,000 people marched down İstiklal Avenue, Istanbul’s main pedestrian area, to denounce the trial of some 150 people on charges of links to Kurdish Communities Union, or KCK, the alleged urban branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. US senior admiral sees PKK threat as issue to be solved sooner or later

The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Wednesday that the PKK threat was an issue that needed to be solved sooner or later.

Admiral Michael Mullen said he thought the PKK threat was something that needed to be resolved in the long run.

“We’ve got great relationships with the Turkish military. They have been enormously supportive in Afghanistan, for instance, where they lead, they command the forces in Kabul,” Mullen told a press conference at the Foreign Press Council in Washington, D.C.. Read the rest of this entry »
