US designates five PKK leaders as narcotics traffickers

Five suspected leaders of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, have been designated as narcotics traffickers by the United States, the country’s embassy told Turkey on Thursday.

“Today’s action freezes any assets the five individuals may have under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits U.S. persons from conducting financial or commercial transactions with them,” the U.S. Treasury said in a letter relayed to Turkey.

The five include Cemil Bayik and Duran Kalkan, who the U.S. says founded the group, as well as Remzi Kartal, Sabri Ok and Adem Uzun, the statement said. Read the rest of this entry »



Turkish soldier dies in clash with Kurdish rebels

One Turkish soldier died Saturday after being injured in clashes between the army and Kurdish rebels in southern Turkey, Anatolia news agency reported.

Six soldiers were injured in the fight in Osmaniye province on Friday, following an earlier clash in which seven members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were killed in the nearby Mediterranean province of Hatay.
Acting on a tip-off that militants had sneaked in from neighbouring Syria, the soldiers confronted the group in Hatay and seized explosives as well. Read the rest of this entry »
