US defense official visits Turkey to strengthen cooperation against PKK

US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Alexander Vershbow led an interagency delegation to Ankara on Thursday to discuss ways to improve US-Turkey cooperation against the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a statement from the US Embassy in Ankara said.

Ambassador Vershbow’s delegation met with a broad Turkish interagency team, headed by Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Halit Çevik. Ambassador Vershbow met separately with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu, and Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar. Two policemen killed in PKK attack in southern Turkey

Two police officers were killed in an attack by the suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southern province of Osmaniye today, daily Hürriyet reported on its website.

‘Germany must call PKK a terror group’

Germany must declare the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as a terrorist organization, according to Turkey’s deputy prime minister.

Bekir Bozdağ said Oct. 23 that Germany should from now on declare the PKK as a terrorist organization, not just a criminal gang. “Countries should assume a common stance on terrorism wherever it occurs,” Bozdağ said during a meeting in Munich, Germany. Bozdağ said Turkey attached importance to cooperation in combating terrorism because it knows that terrorism does not recognize nation, race, religion or sect. Three soldiers killed, six injured in southeastern Turkey

One noncommissioned officer has been killed and six soldiers injured in clashes while two soldiers were killed in a land-mine attack in Turkey’s southeastern Hakkari province.

Hakkari Gov. Muammer Türker said soldiers conducting operations in Kazan Valley came in contact with members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). One soldier was killed and six were wounded in the ensuing clash.

Meanwhile, a land mine was remotely detonated by suspected PKK militants as a group of soldiers passed by in Tekeli region of Şemdinli district. Two soldiers were killed in the explosion. Read the rest of this entry »

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) launched one of the bloodiest attacks of its history against the Turkish military yesterday, killing 24 troops and wounding 18 in simultaneous assaults in Çukurca, Hakkari, near the Iraqi border that started Tuesday night and continued until yesterday morning. At least eight killed in Bitlis bomb attack

Five policemen and three civilians died today in Güroymak district of the southeastern province Bitlis in a suspected roadside bomb explosion.

A bomb that was planted in a manhole went off while a police vehicle was passing, just outside Güroymak, security sources said.

Bitlis Gov. Nurettin Yılmaz told reporters in the eastern city that five police officers and three civilians were killed in the explosion, which was caused by a remote-controlled bomb. “Four other people were injured and are now receiving treatment at the Bitlis State Hospital,” he said. Four policemen, two civilians hurt in Turkey bomb blast

A makeshift bomb went off during a demonstration by supporters of the Kurdish separatist group PKK in southern Turkey Sunday, injuring four policemen and two civilians, media reported.

The device, hidden behind a trash can, exploded in the town of Sehan in southern Adana province as “our security forces intervened to stop a banned protest, injuring six people, including two civilians, Anatolia news agency quoted Adana governor Huseyin Avni Cos as saying.

“Two police officers are in serious condition,” the governor said.

Turkish foreign minister: we don’t have patience for terrorist act

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said that Turkey did not have a patience for a terrorist act on Iraqi soil, which would pose a threat against Turkey.

Holding a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in Ankara on Thursday, Davutoglu said that they mostly discussed terrorism issue, adding that a terrorist structure that nested in Iraq was a threat against territorial integrity of both Turkey and Iraq.
