Deadly attack in Istanbul linked to earlier bombing, official says

The bombing that killed four soldiers and a teenage girl Tuesday in Istanbul’s Halkalı district has been linked to a bombing in Küçükçekmece on June 8 that injured 15 police officers, Istanbul’s governor said Thursday.

Terror strikes Turkey’s largest city as PKK attack kills five

The stakes in Turkey’s war on terror dramatically escalated Tuesday when a bomb attack on a military bus in Istanbul killed four soldiers and one teenage civilian following warnings that cities would be targeted.

The shuttle bus was carrying gendarmerie personnel early in the morning in the Halkalı district when a reportedly remote-controlled fragmentation bomb exploded, killing five and injuring 11 onboard.

An illegal organization called the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, or TAK, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on its website, Agence France-Presse reported. Another Turkish soldier killed, bringing weekend death toll to 12

Members of an outlawed terrorist group kept up their attacks on Turkey’s military overnight, killing one soldier and wounding another in the country’s east, bringing this weekend’s death toll to 12 soldiers, Anatolia news agency reported Sunday.

Clashes broke out between soldiers and members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, after the terrorists attacked a barracks near Palu in eastern Turkey, the agency said.

Turkish military bombs targets in N Iraq after PKK attacks in Southeast

The Turkish military bombed targets in northern Iraq on Wednesday after an outlawed terrorist group attacked a military base in Southeast Turkey, killing one soldier, the military said.

Before the air raid, the Turkish Armed Forces also said land troopers marched two to three kilometers past the northern Iraq border.

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, attacked a military base in Şırnak province in southeastern Turkey, close to the country’s border with Iraq, at 1 a.m. Wednesday, the Turkish General Staff said in a written statement. One soldier died in the attack. Read the rest of this entry »



One Turkish soldier dies in clash against PKK in Southeast

One Turkish soldier was killed and four were wounded late Sunday in the latest clash between the military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in rural Hakkari province in southeastern Turkey.

The governor of Hakkari announced that Pvt. Mehmet Ali Birlik was shot dead in the clash, which broke at 10:30 p.m. in a rural area close to the village of Konur in the town of Şemdinli, broadcaster CNNTürk’s web site said.

Seven detained in operation in Southeast Turkey

In an operation against the alleged urban organization of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ party, or PKK, seven people were detained Friday in the eastern province of Van, Anatolia news agency reported.

A simultaneous operation was held in three neighborhoods in Van against the illegal Kurdish Communities Union (KCK) organization.

Meanwhile, PKK militants fired a rocket at an armored police vehicle in the southeastern province of Hakkari’s Çukurca district on Thursday, wounding two police officers, a local security source told AFP. Six Turkish soldiers killed in rocket attack on naval base

Six Turkish soldiers were killed Monday when terrorists fired rockets on a naval base in the southern Turkish city of İskenderun, Anatolia news agency reported.

Seven soldiers were also wounded in the attack that targeted a military vehicle carrying troops for the changing of the guard, the report said.

Three of them were in a critical condition and were taken to a military hospital in the capital, Ankara. PKK steps up attacks in Turkey

Members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, killed five members of Turkey’s security forces plus a civilian on Saturday. The clashes came as jailed Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan reportedly decided to abandon efforts to seek dialogue with the Turkish government, AFP reported.

Two soldiers and a village guard – one of the government-armed locals backing up the military against the PKK – died in clashes in Şırnak province, the military said in an online statement.

Two Turkish soldiers, village guard die in clashes with outlawed PKK

Two Turkish soldiers and a member of village guards helping the Turkish military were killed Saturday in clashes with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, officials announced.

The toll rose to three after a soldier succumbed to his injuries in hospital several hours after the clashes in southeastern Şırnak province, a statement posted on the army’s website said.

Turkish soldier dies in attack on military vehicle in Southeast

One Turkish soldier died Thursday in an attack on a military vehicle in the southeastern province of Siirt’s Pervari district, Anatolia news agency reported.

Bahtiyar Yalınca died in the attack at 9 p.m. during a routine patrol in the town center. Another soldier was injured.
