Turkish security forces killed a PKK terrorist who hijacked a ferry with 18 passengers aboard in a pre-dawn operation on Saturday, a Turkish official said. No one else was hurt in the operation.

The terrorist hijacked the Kartepe ferry Friday evening around 5:45 p.m., taking hostage the passengers including five women as well as four crew members and two trainees.

Istanbul Governor Huseyin Mutlu said the hijacker was shot dead right after the forces boarded the ferry, adding that there was no fire fight. Read the rest of this entry »

EU Affairs Minister Egemen Bağış has urged European countries to cooperate with Turkey in its counterterrorism efforts against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which he claimed was “the largest human and illicit drug trafficking network in Europe,” a comment that came on top of piling resentment of Turkish officials toward Europe for indirectly financing the organization.

US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Alexander Vershbow led an interagency delegation to Ankara on Thursday to discuss ways to improve US-Turkey cooperation against the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a statement from the US Embassy in Ankara said.

Ambassador Vershbow’s delegation met with a broad Turkish interagency team, headed by Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Halit Çevik. Two police officers were killed in an attack by the suspected members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southern province of Osmaniye today, daily Hürriyet reported on its website.

Germany must declare the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as a terrorist organization, according to Turkey’s deputy prime minister.

Bekir Bozdağ said Oct. 23 that Germany should from now on declare the PKK as a terrorist organization, not just a criminal gang. “Countries should assume a common stance on terrorism wherever it occurs,” Bozdağ said during a meeting in Munich, Germany. Bozdağ said Turkey attached importance to cooperation in combating terrorism because it knows that terrorism does not recognize nation, race, religion or sect. One noncommissioned officer has been killed and six soldiers injured in clashes while two soldiers were killed in a land-mine attack in Turkey’s southeastern Hakkari province.

Hakkari Gov. Muammer Türker said soldiers conducting operations in Kazan Valley came in contact with members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). One soldier was killed and six were wounded in the ensuing clash.

Meanwhile, a land mine was remotely detonated by suspected PKK militants as a group of soldiers passed by in Tekeli region of Şemdinli district. Two soldiers were killed in the explosion. Read the rest of this entry »

Five policemen and three civilians died today in Güroymak district of the southeastern province Bitlis in a suspected roadside bomb explosion.

A bomb that was planted in a manhole went off while a police vehicle was passing, just outside Güroymak, security sources said.

Bitlis Gov. Nurettin Yılmaz told reporters in the eastern city that five police officers and three civilians were killed in the explosion, which was caused by a remote-controlled bomb. “Four other people were injured and are now receiving treatment at the Bitlis State Hospital,” he said.
