The local leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in the southeastern province of Mardin was killed in a clash with security forces six months ago, it has been learned.
According to reports on PKK-linked Web sites, Ömer Müslüm, 40, a resident of Syria who operated under the codename “Rüstem,” was killed in May during clashes with security forces in Mardin.
The PKK claimed it had not released any information previously since it had not been able to recover the body and had no information about Müslüm, who took up arms 18 years ago and is believed to have been involved in many clashes.
The PKK launched its armed attacks in 1984; the conflict has claimed more than 40,000 lives to date.

Sweden’s Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected Turkey’s extradition request for a citizen it accused of murder and membership in the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.
“There are obstacles to the extradition of Cemil Kadir Aygan,” the court said in its ruling.
Aygan, a 51-year-old Turkish citizen, lives in Sweden but is known in Turkey under the name Aziz Turan.
Turkey requested his extradition in August 2008, claiming he was “suspected of a crime against the State’s unity for having killed author Musa Anter and injured Orhan Miroğlu with a firearm on September 20 1992, within the framework of the terrorist organization PKK’s activities,” the court said. The operation came after the US labeled senior PKK members Murat Karayılan, Ali Rıza Altun and Zübeyir Aydar significant foreign narcotics traffickers. Mehmet K. was reportedly called to the PKK headquarters to give an account but, afraid of being killed, allegedly fled to Greece with 150,000 euros on his person. Read the rest of this entry »
