Turkish jets hit PKK camps in northern Iraq

Turkish fighters have launched an aerial attack against outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, targets in northern Iraq, the private channel NTV reported late Thursday.

It said 20 fighters hit around 50 points in the Hakurk and Zap region, without detailing the specific targets and damage given.

The attack came a day after Turkey’s top envoy in Baghdad, Murat Özçelik, met with Massoud Barzani, head of the Regional Kurdish Administration. Read the rest of this entry »



Turkey jails 10 over deadly Kurdish rebel attack

A Turkish court has jailed 10 men for more than six years for passing intelligence to Kurdish rebels before a deadly attack on a military unit in 2007, a court official said Thursday.

In its verdict late Wednesday, the court in the eastern city of Van found the suspects guilty of aiding a terrorist organisation and handed each a prison sentence of six years and three months, the official said.

The October 2007 ambush, in which 12 soldiers died, was one of the bloodiest Kurdish attacks in recent years and paved the way for a Turkish cross-border operation against rebel bases in neighbouring Iraq in 2008. Read the rest of this entry »



Turkish soldier killed in Kurdish rebel ambush: source

Separatist Kurdish rebels ambushed a group of soldiers in Turkey’s restive southeast, killing one, a security source said Sunday.

In the attack late Saturday, rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) opened fire with assault rifles on the soldiers who were on a security sweep around Lice town in Diyarbakir province, added the source, speaking on condition of anonymity. An operation was underway to catch the assailants.

The ambush came a day after PKK rebels attacked a military outpost in the eastern province of Tunceli, killing four soldiers and wounding seven. The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Ankara and much of the international community, took up arms against Ankara in 1984 for self-rule in the mainly Kurdish southeast, sparking a conflict that has claimed about 45,000 lives. Two soldiers killed in Turkey’s southeast

Two soldiers were killed and two were wounded in a terrorist attack waged in Semdinli town of the southeastern province of Hakkari on Wednesday.

PKK terrorists opened fire on Turkish security teams patrolling in a mountainous area of Semdinli town, killing one soldier and injuring three others in initial fire.

The wounded soldiers were immediately hospitalized, however, one of them lost his life at the military hospital, officials said. Read the rest of this entry »



Suspected Kurdish rebels attack police in Turkey, one killed

Suspected Kurdish militants opened fire on a police van in southeast Turkey on Thursday, killing a policeman and wounding three others, local officials said.

Dozens of bullets were fired at the vehicle, which was on patrol in the centre of Kiziltepe town, at the Syrian border, witnesses said.

The officer died in hospital after the shooting, which left another policeman and two passers-by wounded, said an official from the governor’s office in Mardin province, where the town is located. Read the rest of this entry »



Ambush in Samsun kills two police officers

Two police officers were killed under cross-fire in an ambush Saturday night in the Ladik district of Samsun.

Unidentified assailants who hid themselves on a five storey construction opened fire with rifles on a police patrol. Police Officer Huseyin Koc was killed instantly in the car while, Malik Soysal who was heavily wounded, died in the hospital.

Samsun Governor Hasan Basri Guzeloglu told reporters after the attack that initial findings suggested the attack was a terrorist ambush. A wide scale operation was launched to catch the assailants after the attack, said Guzeloglu. Read the rest of this entry »



One soldier dies in Southeast Anatolia

One soldier was killed and two others injured in the southeastern province of Batman on Thursday, media reports said, during a series of violent conflicts between the military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ party, or PKK.

Trilateral action plan announced to fight PKK

A security committee comprised Turkish, Iraqi and U.S. officials on Sunday agreed on an “action plan” to fight the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. 

The fifth meeting of the trilateral security committee between Turkey, Iraq and the U.S. was held Sunday in Istanbul, according to statement released Monday by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.

The participating delegations were headed by Turkish Interior Minister Beşir Atalay, Iraqi State Minister for National Security Shirvan Al Waili and U.S. Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson of the United States, according to the statement. Read the rest of this entry »



Three dead, two wounded in mine blast in Turkey’s Southeast

Three soldiers were killed and two were injured Tuesday when a land mine exploded in the southeastern province of Hakkari during a security sweep.

The wounded soldiers were airlifted to the nearby Hakkari Military Hospital. Specialist sergeants Fatih Aydoğdu, 30; Mehmet Kaya Çelik, 24; and Nuri Aydın, also 24, were killed.

Several deadly blasts occurred in Hakkari in March. Two separate attacks occurred earlier in the month, killing two soldiers and wounding four in the district of Şemdinli, which is close to Turkey’s borders with Iraq and Iran. Read the rest of this entry »



One soldier dies in clash with PKK in southeastern Turkey

One soldier died and one was injured in a conflict with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, in the southeastern province of Hakkari on Sunday, private news channel NTV reported.

The conflict erupted in the Dağlıca region, which has been the scene of bloody confrontations in the past. PKK members opened fire on soldiers who were en route to an operation, the TV channel reported.

The PKK emerged at the beginning of the 1980s with demands for more rights for Turkey’s Kurdish population, which lives mainly in the eastern and southeastern regions of the country. The conflict has continued since then, causing more than 30,000 deaths. Read the rest of this entry »
